Our approach

Our mission at Beacon is to teach EVERY child to read and keep them reading. Reading changes EVERYTHING! We want to promote and develop each child’s love and passion for reading.

On entry to our EYFS- Children will take home a story book to share at home. Parents will be invited in each week to pick a book with their child.

Wordless Picture Books

The Lilac Band is aimed at EYFS pupils and contains 22 books, including fiction and non-fiction. These books are wordless books that tell a story through pictures and are designed to develop an understanding of how stories work. They support early practice of reading and exploration of familiar themes to further develop curiosity and inspiration for early readers. These books develop early language skills.

Read Write Inc. Home learning packs

At the start of Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 parents will be invited to attend a Read Write Inc. meeting. During this meeting parents will be shown videos and watch aspects of a phonics lesson in practice. This will be relevant to their child’s year group expectations. Each child will also receive a Read Write Inc. home learning pack containing books and speed sound cards.

Read Write Inc. learning portal

Each week, children in Reception and Key stage 1 will be sent home short videos to watch. These will be to reinforce their weekly speed sounds and practice reading green words containing those sounds.

My Speed Sound books

The My Set 1 and Set 2 and 3 Speed Sound books are sent home to help children to practice reading and writing the sounds they have learnt in class.

The Read Write Inc. Phonics Sound Blending Book

The Sound Blending Books provide extra practice for those children who are beginning to blend confidently. The Sound Blending Books are simple, one word per page books for individual or partner practice. Each word is first encountered on the right hand page and when the child turns the page they will see the word again with the matching picture.

Read Write Inc. Storybook. (Black and white paper copy)

At Beacon Primary school we understand the need for the children to practice what they have already read. Each week we will send home the black and white paper version of the book they have read in their phonics that week. Inside the book are brief notes to parents/ carers to help them to successfully use the books with their child. The children enjoy reading the story they have been working on in class and this also helps to improve their fluency.

Read Write Inc. Book Bag Books

Read Write Inc. Phonics Book Bag Books are engaging texts to support children with additional reading practice outside the classroom. Each Read Write Inc. Book Bag Book is a story or non-fiction text that has been carefully matched to the children’s stage in phonics to reinforce children’s classroom learning of phonics at the appropriate level, helping them to make even faster progress in reading. They provide an additional opportunity for structured practice for children learning to read the Read Write Inc. Set 1, 2 and 3 sounds.

Reading Scheme Books

Once children have completed the RWI Phonics programme they will read a range of fiction and non-fiction books from our banded reading scheme.

Reading for pleasure- picture books/shared stories/ library books.

We encourage our children to read for pleasure and enjoy high quality texts alongside their school reading books. In Reception and Key Stage 1 children are not always expected to read the story as this may be beyond their decoding ability, but that the story is shared at home with their family and read aloud to them. Children will select from familiar books from our class library.

In Key Stage 2 children will also select from a range of high quality fiction and non-fiction texts from their class libraries.
